Makeup Lesson: What to Prepare Before Your Class

By the Vietnam Makeup Artist team · 2026-11-06

Before a 1-to-1 makeup lesson at Vietnam Makeup Artist by Cáo MakeUp, prepare your face with a clean, moisturized base and arrive with any makeup you currently own so we can assess your collection and adjust what you learn. Bring a notebook or phone to record tips, dress in clothes you don't mind getting product on, and tell us in advance if you have sensitive skin, allergies, or specific techniques you want to master—whether bridal looks, heat-resistant makeup for outdoor shoots, or Korean-style application. Most lessons run 2–3 hours in our Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City studio (or your hotel by request). Ask us for a quote on WhatsApp and let us know your skin tone, undertone, and any products you love so we can demonstrate matching shades and techniques tailored to you. The session includes live application on you, hands-on practice by you, and product guidance—no hidden costs, just practical skills you can use immediately.

Before your makeup lesson, the most important step is honest communication with us about your skin and goals. Start by messaging us on WhatsApp with a photo of your face in natural light and tell us:

  • Your skin type (oily, dry, combination, sensitive).
  • Any skin conditions, allergies, or products that irritate you.
  • Whether you're preparing for a wedding, photoshoot, or daily confidence.
  • Any techniques you've tried and didn't like.

This takes 5 minutes but saves confusion on the day. We will also ask whether you prefer to wear your own makeup during the lesson or let us apply products from our collection so you can feel the texture and technique first-hand. Both approaches work; the choice is yours.

What should I bring to my makeup lesson?

Bring any makeup you currently use—foundation, blush, brushes, eyeliner, everything. We examine your collection to see what suits your skin and what needs replacing. Many people buy products on impulse or follow trends that don't flatter their undertone, so we show you exactly how to evaluate shade depth and undertone match in real light. Bring a small notebook or have Notes open on your phone because the techniques we teach—like how to build coverage in humid climates or blend contour on deeper skin tones—are easiest to remember when you jot them down live. Wear an outfit you don't mind getting makeup on; foundation, powder, and cream products can mark fabric, especially if you're practicing application on yourself under our guidance.

How do I prepare my skin before a makeup lesson?

Arrive with clean, moisturized skin and no prior makeup so we start with a neutral canvas. The night before, use your regular cleanser and moisturizer. On the morning of the lesson, splash your face with lukewarm water, apply a lightweight moisturizer suited to your skin type, and wait 10 minutes before you travel to the studio—this lets the moisturizer set so products apply smoothly. If your skin is very oily, use a pore-minimizing primer under the moisturizer; if very dry, add a hydrating serum first. Do not exfoliate the day of the lesson unless we tell you to, because exfoliated skin can feel tender under makeup application and brushes. Avoid heavy caffeine or alcohol the night before if your skin tends to puff, as we need to see your natural face contour. Sunscreen is fine if it's not greasy; just let it dry fully.

Why does Vietnam's heat and humidity change how I apply makeup?

Vietnam's climate—especially in Ho Chi Minh City and during summer months—tests every makeup technique because heat melts products, humidity reactivates oils, and sweat breaks down foundation bonds. During a makeup lesson, we teach climate-proof methods: primer selection for your skin type, setting spray timing, and powder placement that doesn't cake. We also show you which products survive 8 hours outdoors without touching up and which don't. If you're booking a lesson before a photoshoot makeup session or wedding day, tell us the exact location and time so we can prep techniques for those conditions. For example, outdoor shoots in direct sun need different primer and undertone matching than indoor gala events. We test application on you during the lesson and explain why each step matters in this climate.

Should I do a trial before committing to a full class?

A trial is wise if you've never worked with us before or if you're booking for a specific event like a wedding. Many clients book a single 1–1 lesson first to see if our teaching style and product recommendations fit them, then return for deeper classes on specific skills. We customize every session, so there's no risk of wasting time on techniques you don't need. Before your trial, message us with a photo and your biggest makeup challenge—maybe you can't blend eyeshadow, or foundation never matches your undertone, or you want to learn makeup for deeper and mature skin tones. We'll prioritize that in your lesson and show you exactly how to solve it. If you like the session, you can book a follow-up on hair styling, bridesmaids and group makeup, or Korean-style looks. No pressure; we believe in making sure the fit is right first.

What if I want to prepare for a specific event?

Tell us what event you're preparing for—a wedding (yours or as a bridesmaid), an elopement or proposal, a gala, or an outdoor shoot—because the lesson changes. Bridal makeup lessons cover longevity under tears and movement, sweat-proof technique, and how to match your dress and skin tone under different light. Event and party makeup focuses on bold color, staying power in crowded venues, and touch-up tricks when you're having fun. Photoshoot makeup prioritizes contour depth, camera-ready blending, and shade selection that photographs true. Hair styling can be added if you want the full look coordinated. Before you book, send us a photo of your outfit or venue, the time of day, and whether you'll be indoors or outdoors. We then design the lesson to teach exactly what you need for that context. This is why we always ask before quoting—one-size-fits-all makeup lessons don't work in Vietnam's varied seasons and spaces.

What to check before you book your makeup lesson

Before you confirm your booking, ask us these questions:

  • Which Cáo MakeUp team member will teach? We have senior artists, each with different strengths. If you want to learn Korean-style makeup, groom and men grooming, or makeup for every skin type, ask which artist specializes in that.
  • Where will the lesson happen? Our studios are in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. If you prefer hotel-based makeup, ask if we can travel to you and what the logistics are.
  • How long is the session? Standard lessons are 2–3 hours. Longer sessions for group and bridesmaids makeup may take 4+ hours.
  • What products will we use? We use professional-grade makeup, but if you want to learn exclusively with your own products or drugstore brands, say so. We adapt.
  • Ask us on WhatsApp; we understand Vietnam's weather and traffic.
  • Can you record or take photos? Yes. Some clients like video notes of techniques.

FAQ

What's the best time of year to book a makeup lesson in Vietnam?

Book anytime—we teach year-round. However, if you're preparing for a wedding or shoot, book 4–6 weeks ahead so we have time for a trial and refinement. Monsoon humidity peaks May–September; if you're learning specifically for outdoor events in that season, tell us so we can emphasize sweat-proof technique.

Do I need to buy new makeup before the lesson?

No. Bring what you have. We assess it and tell you honestly what works and what to replace. You'll learn to shop smarter afterward.

Can I do a makeup lesson if I'm very new to makeup?

Yes. We teach complete beginners all the time. Bring your face and an open mind. We start from brush grip and base application.

What if my skin tone is very deep or very light—will I find matching shade recommendations?

Absolutely. We specialize in matching undertones for Western, mixed, and deeper skin tones. Tell us your undertone (warm, cool, neutral) when you book, and we'll have comparison shades ready.

Can someone else attend my lesson, like my partner or bridesmaid?

Yes. Group lessons are possible; ask us for a quote on WhatsApp. If it's just an observer in the studio, let us know in advance so we arrange space.

What happens if I'm allergic to a product we try during the lesson?

We stop immediately and use something else. This is why the allergy list at booking is critical. We carry alternatives for common sensitivities.
