Makeup Lesson for Asian Features: Hanoi Technique & Undertone Guide

By the Vietnam Makeup Artist team · 2026-11-06

A makeup lesson for Asian features trains you to enhance monolid and hooded eye shapes, match warm and neutral undertones accurately, and apply techniques that survive Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City heat and humidity. At Vietnam Makeup Artist by Cáo MakeUp, our 1-to-1 sessions run 2–3 hours, cover eye placement, blending angles, brow shaping for facial bone structure, and product choice (cream vs. powder base, undertone-correct concealer, longwear formulas). Most lessons include a full face trial so you see results immediately. We work in English with clients at our studio or your hotel. Cost varies by complexity; ask us for a quote on WhatsApp. Avoid generic YouTube tutorials filmed in cool climates—they rarely address monolid anatomy or humidity-proof layering. Why monolid and hooded eyes need different eyeshadow placement than Western tutorials teach

Monolid and hooded eye anatomy means the lid space disappears when your eye opens. Placing shadow where a tutorial shows—on the lid crease—results in invisible color once you look ahead. We place shadow above the natural fold, on the mobile lid, so it appears when your eyes are open and you're facing someone. Brow bone space gets lighter shade to lift; inner corner gets highlight to open the eye; outer corner gets darker placement slightly higher than Western positioning. The angle matters: we work 10–15 degrees higher than Caucasian eye placements. This single shift transforms how makeup reads on your face.

How to match undertone when your skin is warm, olive, or deeper than beauty counter samples

Undertone—the base color beneath your skin (warm yellow/golden, cool pink/red, neutral)—matters more than depth. Many deeper and olive skin tones are warm or neutral, but foundations and concealers are often mixed toward cool pink. We compare three samples against your jawline in daylight, then indoors, then ask: does it blend or sit as a mask? Warm undertones often suit golden, bronze, and peachy products; neutral tones accept both warm and cool; cool undertones need pink and ashier shades. We use mixing—layering two shades—to get exact matches for mixed heritage and complex undertones. One session teaches you this skill so you shop independently after.

What products and techniques actually survive 8+ hours in Vietnam heat and humidity

Heat and humidity break down water-based and silicone formulas fast. We layer: mattifying primer first, then cream base (long-wearing, not dewy), powder in sections (not all-over dust), and set spray as a final lock. Eyeshadow over primer, not bare lid. Pencil eyeliner on the waterline lasts longer than liquid. Cream blush blends into base and doesn't separate. We skip heavy powders that cake and instead use light, translucent layers. In a lesson, we show you product order, timing (how long each layer needs to set), and which formulas we've tested in tropical humidity. You'll learn the difference between a product that lasts 4 hours and one that lasts 12.

Do you need a trial before your wedding or event?

A trial is essential if it's your first time with us, if you're trying a bold look, or if you have very sensitive skin or specific undertone concerns. Trials let us test products on you, see how your skin reacts in humidity, adjust shades, and confirm timing on the actual day. We run trials in our studio or your hotel; you see the final look and we photograph it for your reference. For bridal makeup, a trial is standard practice—it builds confidence and catches any allergies or application issues before the real event. Trials are separate bookings; ask us for a quote on WhatsApp.

Should you learn makeup for a specific event, or build everyday skills?

Both paths work. Some clients book a makeup lesson focused on bridal or event & party makeup—one look perfected for that day. Others want everyday skills: how to do a natural face in 15 minutes, contouring for their bone structure, and how to adapt looks for different seasons. A 1-to-1 lesson is flexible. We can teach broad skills in one session, or you can book multiple sessions to go deeper (eyeshadow blending, contouring, brow design). We also offer makeup for every skin type guidance so you're confident with mature skin, acne-prone skin, or deeper tones. Decide what you'll use most and build there.

What to prepare before booking a makeup lesson

Bring:

  • Any makeup you own and like (we'll analyze undertone and staying power).
  • Photos of looks you want to learn (from any source—we'll adapt technique to your features).
  • Your skin care routine and any allergies or sensitivities.
  • A phone or camera to photograph the final look and notes.

Tell us:

  • Your eye shape (monolid, hooded, double-lid, or unsure—we'll assess).
  • Your undertone (if you know it) or describe your best shade match.
  • Any events coming up (wedding, party, photoshoot).
  • Whether you prefer cream or powder products, or want to try both.
  • Your comfort level: beginner, intermediate, or already wear makeup daily.

Timing:

  • Book at least 2 weeks ahead for bridal or event lessons (so you have time to source products we recommend).
  • Trials should happen 1–2 weeks before the event, not the day before.
  • Arrive 10 minutes early; natural light helps us see undertone clearly.

We work in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City at our studio or your hotel. If you're in Da Nang or Hoi An, contact us to arrange travel.

Product types we teach you to choose and why

We don't sell makeup—we teach you to evaluate and buy it independently. But in a lesson, we explain why certain types work:

  • Primer: mattifying for oily skin + humidity, hydrating for dry skin. We show you how to test it.
  • Base: cream lasts longer in heat than liquid; full coverage matters less than undertone match.
  • Concealer: must be one shade lighter than base and warmer if you're warm-toned (not pink-corrected).
  • Eyeshadow: cream eyeshadow over powder eyeshadow in humidity; we teach blending angles unique to your eye shape.
  • Eyeliner: pencil + powder hybrid stays; liquid alone fades in humidity.
  • Blush: cream blends seamlessly; powder can separate. We teach you to layer both if you want staying power.
  • Setting spray: essential in Vietnam; we show you spritz technique so it doesn't drip.

You'll leave a lesson knowing exactly what type to buy and where to shop (online, duty-free, local pharmacies) based on your budget.

Lessons for deeper skin tones and undertone complexity

Deeper skin tones often have warm, neutral, or very cool undertones—and beauty counters rarely stock shades that match. We match undertone before depth, so a lesson teaches you to spot warm vs. cool in deeper shades. Many deeper tones have warm or olive undertones; we show how to choose bronzer, blush, and contour that complement, not clash. Mixed heritage skin might shift undertone across zones (warm jaw, cool cheeks, olive forehead)—we teach sectional matching. We also show you how to adjust shadow colors: what looks too warm or ashy, and how to layer shades to get the look you want. One session arms you with the vocabulary and technique to shop independently and adapt tutorials to your specific undertone.

How a makeup lesson runs: step-by-step

  1. Consultation (10 min): We ask about your goals, eye shape, undertone, sensitivities, and any makeup you love or hate.
  2. Skin assessment (5 min): Natural light, we check your undertone, skin texture, and any concerns (oiliness, dryness, sensitivity).
  3. Technique demo (30–40 min): We apply makeup to one half of your face, narrating every step: primer, base, concealer placement (different for monolid eyes), shadow angles, blending, brow shaping, blush placement, eyeliner.
  4. Your turn (40–50 min): You apply the other half while we guide. We pause, adjust, and explain why each choice matters for your features.
  5. Full look & photos (10 min): We complete your makeup, you see the result, we photograph it for your reference.
  6. Product Q&A (10 min): We discuss what products to buy, where, and how to replicate the look at home.

Sessions run 2–3 hours total. You leave with photos, a product list, and confidence.

Is a lesson worth it before booking professional makeup for an event?

Yes—but only if you plan to do your own makeup regularly after. A lesson teaches you technique so you're independent. If you're booking us for bridal makeup on your wedding day, a lesson isn't necessary; we'll handle it. But if you want to do your own makeup for events, or you want to understand what products and techniques work best for your features before paying for a service, a lesson is the smartest investment. You'll also know what to ask a makeup artist, which saves time during a professional appointment.

Real obstacles people hit—and how to avoid them

"I did the makeup but it looked invisible on my eye." Your shadow placement was too low on the lid. For monolid/hooded eyes, shadow goes above the fold, higher than tutorials show. We teach you to identify your lid space and place color where it's visible when you're looking ahead.

"My foundation doesn't match in daylight." You matched indoors or in warm light. Undertone shifts in different lighting. Always test foundation in daylight and indoors. If it looks pink indoors but ashy outside, it's not your shade—try a warmer tone.

"My makeup melted after 4 hours." Your base wasn't mattified, or you used a water-based formula in humidity. Primer + cream base + powder + spray = 8+ hours. We show you the exact order and product types that work in Vietnam heat.

"I can't blend eyeshadow—it looks muddy." Blending angle matters. For hooded eyes, angle differs from flat lids. We teach you the specific brush angle and motion for your eye shape, not generic blending advice.

"My undertone is mixed—is it warm or cool?" Many people are neutral or have shifting undertones. A lesson teaches you to test (jaw, inner wrist, eye area in sunlight) and accept that you might wear warm blush but cool-toned eyeshadow. There's no rule—only what flatters your specific undertone zones.

Learn makeup tailored to you, then book professional services when you need them

A lesson is a foundation. After you learn technique and undertone matching, you can book us for professional makeup at your hotel on a special day, or photoshoot makeup where we apply your new skills with professional products and timing. Many clients do both: one lesson to build confidence, then professional services when they want a polished result without the effort. We also offer Korean-style makeup lessons if that's your goal, or bridal makeup trials that include technique coaching.

FAQ

What is the difference between a makeup lesson and a trial?

A lesson teaches you to apply makeup—you do half your face while we guide. A trial is when we apply your complete makeup so you see the final look before an event. Both include consultation and product advice.

Can a lesson work if I've never worn makeup?

Yes. We start with basics: primer, how much product to use, brush vs. fingers, blending fundamentals. By the end of a 2–3 hour session, you'll have done half your face and feel confident to practice at home.

How soon after a lesson can I do my makeup alone?

You'll be ready the same day. After a lesson, practice once or twice at home to build muscle memory. Most people feel comfortable and fast within 1–2 weeks.

Do I need to buy specific products recommended in the lesson?

No. We teach you types of products and how to evaluate them. You can shop from any brand in your budget. We explain what to look for so you choose wisely, not expensively.

Is a makeup lesson suitable if I have sensitive or acne-prone skin?

Absolutely. Tell us about your skin condition when you book. We'll use gentle, tested products and teach you application so you don't irritate your skin. See makeup for every skin type for more details.

Can I book a lesson for my wedding bridesmaids group?

Yes. A group makeup lesson for 2–4 people runs 2.5–3 hours and teaches a cohesive look so everyone knows how to replicate or touch up on the day. Ask us for a quote on WhatsApp.
