Makeup Class Trial: What to Expect Before Committing

By the Vietnam Makeup Artist team · 2026-11-06

A makeup class trial with Vietnam Makeup Artist by Cáo MakeUp is a 1–2 hour introductory session where we assess your current skills, discuss your skin undertone and concerns (heat, humidity, oily zones), apply makeup together, and teach you one or two techniques you'll use immediately—like a long-wear base, flattering blush placement, or a look for your next event. Trials happen at our Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City studio or your hotel; we bring trial products (not full-size) so you can feel the texture and finish. Cost varies by location and session length—ask us for a quote on WhatsApp. Trials suit bridesmaids testing a shared look, brides deciding on a trial-to-wedding package, people curious about Korean-style makeup, and anyone hesitant about committing to a full course. What to avoid: arriving with wet hair or fresh sunscreen (we'll ask you to prep skin), and expecting a full face in 60 minutes—we prioritize learning over speed.

A makeup class trial is a short, low-pressure session where you learn core techniques, test your skin tone match, and decide if full lessons suit your goals. It bridges the gap between watching videos and investing in a full 1-to-1 makeup class, and it's your chance to ask questions in real time, see how makeup behaves in Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City's heat and humidity, and feel products against your actual skin before booking a wedding morning or photoshoot.

How long does a makeup trial class take?

A trial typically runs 60–90 minutes depending on your starting point and goals. We begin with a 10–15 minute skin and undertone assessment: we look at your natural lighting, test foundation shades on your jawline, and ask about your climate concerns (sweat, UV exposure, how long makeup needs to last). The remaining time is hands-on: we demo a technique on you, then guide your hand as you try it on the other side of your face or on a practice surface. This isn't a full glam—it's 1–2 targeted skills you'll take home. A trial suits people with tight schedules who want to sample our approach without a 3–5 session commitment.

What's included in a trial session?

We provide trial-size products: a foundation or BB cream matched to your skin, a blush, a brush or two, and whatever you're focusing on (eyeliner, mascara, contouring—you choose). You'll take home a photo of the finished look on your phone and written notes on the products we used, application order, and one key tip. If you loved the session and book a full makeup class package within two weeks, we'll credit the trial fee toward your first full session. Trials do not include a finished photoshoot look or heavy styling—that's for photoshoot makeup or bridal makeup bookings. What to bring: clean face (minimal makeup, no primer—we want to see your bare skin), reference photos if you're aiming for a specific vibe (e.g., a screenshot of a Korean eye look), and an open mind about your undertone—we may tell you your usual shade is slightly off.

Why do undertones matter in a trial?

Undertones are the hidden pigment beneath your skin surface—cool (pink, red, blue), warm (yellow, orange, golden), or neutral (a mix). In Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City's tropical humidity, the wrong undertone amplifies redness, clogs pores, or separates from sweat. A trial lets us test 2–3 foundation shades side by side in daylight and indoor lighting so you see the difference before committing. Many Western and mixed skin tones are mismatched by single-shade formulas; a trial reveals whether you need one formula for summer and another for winter, or if a single shade with strategic powder placement works year-round. This is non-negotiable for special skin concerns (darker tones, reactive skin, textured zones). A trial also tests whether our undertone logic matches yours—some clients expect "cool," discover they're neutral, and shift their whole wardrobe thinking.

A trial locks in your undertone match—critical for brides planning bridal makeup with a specific color palette.

What happens if you hate the trial look?

We'll restart. A trial is a no-judgment learning space, not a final product. If the blush is too bright, we adjust the shade or placement. If the base feels heavy, we thin it or switch to a lighter formula. If you hate the overall direction (maybe you wanted natural, we leaned glam), we pivot and show you something else. We photograph each stage so you see the progression and have options. The goal is for you to leave knowing what you liked, what felt uncomfortable, and which techniques to practice at home. A trial is also where we flag concerns: if your skin is reactive or oily, we'll mention this affects hotel-makeup timing or event makeup touch-up frequency. Honesty protects both of us—if a full makeup class isn't the right fit for your timeline, we'll say so.

Should you book a trial before a wedding or event?

Yes, if this is your first time with us or you've never had professional makeup, or if your skin behaves unpredictably in heat. A trial is cheaper and lower-pressure than booking a full bridal or event makeup session and discovering on the day that your undertone is off or the base breaks down by hour three. Brides often do a trial 3–6 weeks before the wedding, then book the full bridal makeup day; this gives us a baseline, lets you practice touch-ups, and means zero surprises morning-of. For bridesmaids & group makeup, a trial ensures the shared look (same undertone approach, same technique) works for all skin tones in your party. For photoshoot makeup, a trial confirms the look translates on camera under studio or outdoor light. For elopements and proposals, a trial is often skipped because the session is already intimate and we have flexibility—but it's still an option if you're unsure.

Plan your wedding-day look

How do you prepare for a trial, and what mistakes to avoid?

Prep your skin: wash your face 2 hours before, apply a light moisturizer (no primer—we want to see how products behave on bare skin), no fresh sunscreen on the face (it can break down base application). Arrive with dry hair or in a style you're comfortable in—if you're also considering hair styling, mention this when you book so we can time it in.

Bring references: show us photos of looks you like (on people with similar undertones, ideally), and mention events you're preparing for—if it's a groom & men trial, we'll focus on sustainable, natural finishes; if it's Korean-style makeup, we'll emphasize glass skin and gradient lips.

Ask about humidity: describe how your skin reacts—does foundation cake when you sweat, do creams migrate, does powder disappear? This informs our product picks and technique.

Mistakes to avoid:

  • Wearing full makeup to a trial (we can't see your actual skin tone).
  • Booking a trial the day before an event (no time to practice or repurchase products).
  • Assuming one trial = readiness for a full bridal or event day (a trial is learning; makeup class packages build skill over weeks).
  • Not asking about heat and humidity prep (we have tricks, but you need to know them).

FAQ

Is a makeup trial the same as a full makeup class?

No. A trial is one short session (60–90 min) to test a technique and undertone match. A full makeup class is 3–5 sessions (2–3 hours each) building skills progressively: base, blush, eyes, lips, full faces, and homework. Trials suit explorers; classes suit people committing to practice.

Can I use products from a trial on my wedding day?

Trial products are sample sizes meant for practice. We'll note the shades and brands for you to buy full-size. If you book a full bridal makeup session, we use professional full-size products—not the trial versions—because they're formulated for heat, humidity, and 8–12 hour wear.

How much does a makeup trial cost?

Ask us for a quote on WhatsApp. Trial pricing depends on location (Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, or travel to Da Nang / Hoi An), session length, and complexity. If you book a makeup class package afterward, we credit the trial fee.

What if I'm not sure what I want to learn in a trial?

We'll guide you. Message us before booking with your skin concerns, upcoming events, or makeup goals. We'll suggest a focus—e.g., a base that survives heat, a blush for your undertone, or a Korean-style makeup technique—so your trial time is efficient.

Do trials include hair?

Trials focus on makeup. If you want hair styling too, let us know when you book—we can bundle them, or schedule separately. For bridal makeup or event makeup trials, hair is usually separate.

Can I bring a friend to my trial?

Yes. If your friend is learning too, each gets a trial. If they're just observing, that's fine—but let us know so we plan time and space. For bridesmaids & group makeup trials, all bridesmaids trying the shared look should attend.

What if my trial date doesn't work anymore?

Message us on WhatsApp. Reschedule within 48 hours for no fee. Cancellations within 24 hours may forfeit the trial fee depending on location and demand.
