Korean Makeup Artist: What to Prepare for Your Session
By the Vietnam Makeup Artist team · 2026-11-06
Preparing for a Korean makeup session with us at Vietnam Makeup Artist by Cáo MakeUp means arriving with clean, moisturised skin, showing us reference photos of the look you want, and allowing 60–90 minutes for a full face. Bring water, a fan if sensitive to heat, and wear a top you don't mind product on. Arrive 10–15 minutes early so we can assess your skin tone, undertone, and any concerns (sensitivity, breakouts, oiliness). Tell us your event—whether bridal, photoshoot, or event—so we can choose products and techniques that survive Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City humidity. Avoid heavy foundation the night before, skip sunscreen 2 hours before if it's oily, and don't wear makeup that day. Cost depends on services; ask us for a quote on WhatsApp. Book on WhatsApp +84 338 762 340
What Does "Korean Makeup Preparation" Really Mean?
Korean makeup is not a single look—it's a philosophy: skin-first, gradient lips, puppy eyes, and undertone matching over heavy coverage. Preparing for this means understanding that our job starts before the brush touches your face. We need your skin hydrated, your face shape clear in your mind, and your expectations honest. If you've seen Korean beauty on social media, understand that what works on a 20-year-old with fair skin in Seoul may need reshaping for your face, age, and climate in Vietnam. Preparation is about alignment, not imitation.

How Should You Prep Your Skin Before Arrival?
The night before your session, cleanse gently, apply a hydrating toner or essence, and use a lightweight moisturiser—skip oil-based serums unless your skin is very dry. On the morning of your appointment, wash your face with lukewarm water and a gentle cleanser, pat dry, and apply moisturiser again 30 minutes before you arrive so it sets. Do not apply sunscreen, primer, or any makeup; these interfere with our colour matching and product adhesion in the heat. If your skin is congested, breakout-prone, or reactive, tell us in your WhatsApp message when you book—we adjust product selection and technique. Avoid exfoliating, facials, or waxing 48 hours before; new inflammation reads as redness we cannot colour-correct cleanly. Hydration is non-negotiable in Vietnam's humidity; if your skin is dry, dehydrated makeup will crack by midday.
What Reference Photos Should You Bring?
Screenshots alone are not enough. Gather 5–8 photos showing: (1) the eye shape and colour gradient you like, (2) lip shape and tone, (3) the overall "vibe" (soft, bold, glossy, matte), and crucially, (4) a photo of a person whose face shape or skin tone is similar to yours. Show us these on WhatsApp before you book if possible; this helps us tell you honestly if a look will suit you or if we'll adapt it. Avoid showing us faces with heavy Photoshop, studio lighting that doesn't exist in real life, or only close-ups of the eyes—we need to see how the makeup works on a whole face in daylight. If you're booking for a specific event—photoshoot makeup, bridal look, or event and party—the context changes what we prepare: photoshoot needs more definition and longer wear; bridal needs elegance and heat resistance; event may call for bolder colour. Send these photos with your booking so we arrive prepared.
How Long Should You Budget for a Session?
| Session Type | Typical Duration | What's Included | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Makeup only (eye focus) | 45–60 min | Eyes, brows, lips, skin prep | Photoshoot, detail work |
| Full face Korean makeup | 60–90 min | Skin, contouring, eyes, brows, lips, touch-up tips | Bridal, events, gala |
| Makeup + hair styling | 120–150 min | Full makeup, hair design, coordination | Weddings, elopements, formal events |
| 1-to-1 makeup class | 90–120 min | Hands-on teaching, product education, your techniques | Self-application skill, long-term savings |
| Group (bridesmaids, friends) | +30 min per person after first | Coordinated looks, consistency, efficiency | Weddings, group events |
Arriving early matters. We need 10–15 minutes to check your skin, assess undertone and eye shape, and confirm the final look with you before we begin. If you book a full face and feel rushed after 60 minutes, that's a sign the session was underscoped or your skin needed more prep time. Makeup lessons take longer because you're learning as well as receiving; plan for that. For group and bridesmaid makeup, stagger your arrivals so the first person isn't sitting for 2 hours with finished makeup.

What Should You Physically Bring and Wear?
Wear a button-up or loose shirt, or bring a makeup cape or towel—product and setting spray can stain. Bring: a water bottle (you'll be sitting for 1+ hours); a small mirror if you have strong anxiety (we have mirrors, but personal control helps); a phone charger or portable battery; and any medications you take for sensitivity or anxiety. Wear minimal jewellery so we can access your ears and neck if needed. If you wear contact lenses, bring your case and rewetting drops; bright lights and setting spray can irritate dry eyes. Bring a fan if you're heat-sensitive; Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City humidity can feel intense indoors even with air conditioning. Do not bring: heavy perfume (it lingers and can trigger headaches during a long session), loose glitter or powder (it contaminates our space), or expectations that the look will be identical to a celebrity's—we work with what you bring, and that is enough. If you're booking hotel-based makeup, confirm whether the space has a mirror, good lighting, and air conditioning before your appointment.

How Do We Match Undertone and Skin Tone Honesty?
This is where most Korean makeup fails for non-Korean skin: undertone matching. Korean beauty traditionally assumes cool undertones and fair skin. We don't. We look at you—your natural undertone (warm, cool, or neutral), your depth (fair, medium, deep, very deep), and whether you're mixed-race or have uneven tone—and we build the look from there. Bring photos of makeup on skin similar to yours; if you only show us fair-skinned models, we'll gently push back. Our job is to tell you if a look will read as greyish, muddy, or washed-out on you, and to reshape it so it sings. For makeup suited to every skin type, this is foundational. If you're unsure of your undertone, on WhatsApp before you book, tell us your ethnicity, any mixed heritage, and whether gold or silver jewellery looks better on your skin—we'll guide your prep.
What Can Go Wrong and How to Avoid It?
Skin prepped too late: Hydration needs time to settle. Moisturise the evening before and again 30 minutes before arrival, not 2 minutes before.
Wrong reference photos: Photos shot in poor light, heavy filters, or on someone with a very different face shape lead to disappointment. Bring diverse, unfiltered options.
Wearing foundation or sunscreen: These block our colour matching and primer application. Arrive bare-faced.
Not communicating the occasion: A photoshoot look is not a bridal look, and an event look may be bolder than you expect. Tell us upfront.
Rushing or overheating: If you're anxious, mention it. We can take breaks, adjust timing, and ensure you're comfortable. Discomfort shows in your face and photos.
Assuming one look works forever: Korean makeup trends shift; a reference from 2 years ago may feel dated. Bring current photos and ask us if a look suits 2026.
When Should You Book and What to Ask Before Confirming?
Book 2–4 weeks ahead for events, weddings, or elopement and proposal makeup; 1–2 weeks for photoshoots; same-week for casual makeup or makeup lessons. Before you confirm, ask us:
- Do you have availability on my date and time?
- Will you do a trial? (Trials are helpful for bridal; we can arrange this separately.)
- What's the quote for my session type? (Ask on WhatsApp; we'll send a breakdown.)
- If I'm booking hotel makeup or on-location, do you charge a travel fee? (We serve Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang, and Hoi An; travel costs vary.)
- What products do you use, and are they suitable for my skin (sensitive, oily, acne-prone)?
- Can you do a makeup lesson or teach me touch-up techniques during my session? (Yes, especially in 1-to-1 classes.)
- What's your policy if I'm unhappy with the result? (We'll adjust on the day; honesty upfront prevents this.)

The Real Honesty: Not Every Look Suits Every Face or Climate
Korean makeup is beautiful and achievable, but Vietnam's heat and humidity test every product and technique. What lasts 8 hours in an air-conditioned Seoul studio may last 4 in outdoor humidity here. We use heat- and humidity-resistant formulas and setting methods (not generic tips you'll read elsewhere), but that starts with your prep. Dehydrated skin, old sunscreen residue, or poor moisturisation will cause breakdown. Equally, some Korean trends—like very pale, matte skin—read as washed-out on deeper skin tones or in natural daylight. Our job is to tell you this, not to flatter you into a look that won't work. If you see a reference photo and ask, "Will this suit me?", we'll tell you yes, yes with tweaks, or honestly, no—and we'll suggest what will.

What to Check Before You Book
- Your skin concern: Oily, dry, combination, sensitive, acne-prone, rosacea? Tell us on WhatsApp so we choose products and techniques accordingly.
- Your event: Bridal, photoshoot, event, everyday, learning? Context shapes preparation and product choice.
- Your location: Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City? Da Nang or Hoi An by request? Travel affects timing and availability.
- Your reference photos: Are they unfiltered, diverse skin tones, and current (2025–2026)? Bring them before booking.
- Your timeline: When do you need this? Bridal needs longer lead time; casual can be booked sooner.
- Your honest undertone: Do you know it? If not, ask us on WhatsApp; we'll guide you based on your description.

FAQ
Do I need a makeup trial before my bridal session?
Trials help you see the look in real light and ask questions without event-day pressure. We can arrange a separate trial; ask for pricing on WhatsApp. Not mandatory, but strongly recommended for weddings.
What if my skin is oily or breakout-prone?
Tell us when you book. We use oil-control primers, long-wear formulas, and non-comedogenic products. Avoid heavy moisturiser on breakout areas the morning of your session, but do hydrate the night before.
Can you do Korean makeup on deeper or very deep skin tones?
Yes. We colour-match and adjust undertone so the look doesn't read as grey or ashy. Bring a reference photo of makeup on similar skin tones if you're unsure; we'll adapt it for you.
How long does Korean makeup last in Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City heat?
With proper prep and our technique, 6–8 hours for a full face, longer if you use our touch-up tips. Photoshoot makeup may last 4–5 hours in outdoor heat; we use extra setting spray and heat-resistant products for this.
What if I'm not happy with the makeup on the day?
Tell us immediately; we adjust. Honesty before you leave matters far more than suffering through photos or an event. We'll reshape the look until you feel confident.
Can I get a makeup lesson instead of just a makeup application?
Yes. Our 1-to-1 makeup classes teach you Korean techniques, product selection, and application for your face shape and undertone. You'll apply the makeup yourself (we guide), then get tips for daily touch-ups.
